Not So Hidden Gem

It’s a gem, hidden in plain sight. I’d argue that Los Fogones is the best restaurant in Wayne County that I’ve never had to wait to get a table.

Lomo Saltado (stir-fry with onion, tomato, and your choice of meat served over fries with a side of rice)

Open since 2009 and located just outside the front entrance of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Los Fogones has been one of my favorite restaurants since I first tried it in 2014. And honestly, the only thing I’ve ever ordered is the Lomo Saltado. I’ve sampled other dishes from friends and family over the years, but there’s just something about this one that keeps me coming back. Owner and chef Carlos Herrera-Malaga has it figured out. The food is always fresh and full of flavor without being overpowering.

I actually try not to go too often because I want it to stay special. Most of the time when I go, I bring someone who’s never been before, and they always leave impressed. I also don’t mind going solo and grabbing a seat at the small but well-stocked bar. They make great cocktails and have a solid beer and wine selection too.

I’ve seen the restaurant packed plenty of times, but somehow I’ve never had to wait for a table. Maybe I just go at the right times, or maybe I’ve been lucky. Either way, one of the best parts is that they’re open for both lunch and dinner, which makes it easy to work into just about any day.

Our reccommendations:

Lomo Saltado (Peruvian stir-fry served over fries)
Chaufa (fried rice)
Yuka fries (dipped in yellow sauce)
Potato, chicken and quinoa salad (salad bar)
